Modernisation

Your lift is inflating your community's electricity bill

An old lift uses far more electricity than it needs to, and the community pays for it on the electricity bill, month after month. Modernising it brings the bill down — and there are grants to help you do it.

Energy use

Why an old lift uses so much energy

A lift’s energy use comes mainly from three places: the motor, the lighting in the lift car and the controller. In older lifts, all three waste energy:

  • A geared traction machine uses more power and recovers none of the energy from braking.
  • The light in the lift car is often left on around the clock.
  • An old controller is always drawing power, even when no one is using the lift.

When we modernise it, we fit an efficient motor with energy recovery —it reuses braking energy instead of wasting it—, LED lighting that switches off automatically when the lift car is idle, and a low-consumption controller. The lift uses considerably less energy and the community notices it on the bill.

What’s more, there are public grants for energy-efficiency improvements. We’ll let you know which ones you could apply for in your case.

Frequently asked questions

Will it really make a difference to the bill?

Yes. A modern motor with energy recovery uses considerably less than an old one, and LED lighting with automatic switch-off cuts the constant drain. You’ll see the savings on the community’s bill.

Are there grants for this?

Yes, there are energy-efficiency grants. We’ll tell you which ones apply to your case and support you through the process.

Can you modernise just the energy-related parts?

Yes. You can start with what uses the most —usually the motor and the lighting— and leave the rest for later.
